The ability to actually hear an opponent's objection, instead of dismissing it or pigeon-holing it, and responding to it by creatively extending one's own perpsective, is a rare quality, but provides a benchmark of what a genuine education entails. It's much easier to repeat slogans, dismiss objections, defeat straw men, or either preach to the choir or hymn along with it.Leonard Ortmannhttp://hsq3@cdc.govnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5300812013542782410.post-5208844139064661462011-04-12T14:55:45.008-04:002011-04-12T14:55:45.008-04:00But would that be a good thing? But would that be a good thing?Kenneth D. This to the fore a critical point not only for location privacy, but also for health and other information privacy...which is that there really is no such thing. It is not whether the information is available (it is!)-- whether it should be is a whole other story-- rather what restrictions must be placed on the USE of these data. It should not be legal to violate someone's privacy simply because one can. It most certainly is not ethical to do so.LMLeenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5300812013542782410.post-86438692048241167782011-01-27T14:04:47.730-05:002011-01-27T14:04:47.730-05:00Interesting, thanks! I worked in a computer lab once where a student co-worker and I had a kind of digital arms race where we each tried to get around the security on each other's accounts -- password cracking programs, Trojan horses, etc. Turned out that early versions of Novell NetWare were laughably full of security holes. We learned a lot, but we never thought about taking what we had learned to all the corporate sites that were running NetWare. I guess it's nevertheless a case of play emulating battle.Colin Allenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06654741102989016317noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5300812013542782410.post-75535663915028169182010-08-10T11:43:10.026-04:002010-08-10T11:43:10.026-04:00I agree with Ken that AI combines mystifying and i...I agree with Ken that AI combines mystifying and illuminating.

Scientific models are heuristic fictions we have created to guide research. Brain models are interesting in that they exhibit a self-referential aspect. The result is not quite a paradox—more like a fetish. We create an idol (model) and prostrate ourselves before it by imagining our minds to function wholly within it. It is important not to start believing that our entire mental process is just some epiphenomenon of a model we created. Each model illuminates some aspect of us in the same way that all technology objectifies some aspect of ourselves, but to get trapped in one illusion we have spun is to get caught in the mystifying veil of Maya.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18427037922518306421noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5300812013542782410.post-82227280049503311942010-06-15T15:08:42.267-04:002010-06-15T15:08:42.267-04:00Leonard - According to the article, the Vice Provo...Leonard - According to the article, the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs "doesn't expect students to try to game the system by, for instance, giving their ID cards to friends who will attend the classes.
